The Buttonwood Tree is a symbol of the New York Stock Exchange. On May 17, 1792, twenty-four prominent brokers met beneath a large buttonwood tree that stood at 68 Wall Street. They signed a two sentence document that established the basic rules for trading securities. This simple agreement is considered the founding document of the New York Stock & Exchange Board which in 1863, officially became . The New York Stock Exchange.
